It is a naval version of the truck-launched Type 88 (SSM-1) missile, which in turn was developed from the air-launched Type 80 (ASM-1) missile. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force bought 384 of the missiles. With a range of 150 km (81 nmi), high subsonic speed and a 260 kg (570 lb) warhead, it was first installed on the 9 Murasame class destroyers that started series production in 1994.

Type 17 / SSM-2 ship-to-ship missile (17式艦対艦誘導弾)

... is an anti-ship guided missile developed and operated by Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF).

As a successor of the Type 90 (SSM-1B) ship-to-ship missile, it was developed based on the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's Type 12 surface-to-ship guided missile (SSM-1 Kai). As guidance method, the Type 90 ship-to-ship guided missile adopts inertial guidance for the middle range and active radar homing (ARH) guidance for the terminal range, while the Type 17 missile adds GPS to the intermediate guidance, which leads to improved navigation accuracy. It was also given the ability to update information about the target after launch.

Specifications:
Mass: 700 kg
Length: 5 meters
Diameter: 350 mm (13.8 in)
Engine: solid fuel rocket booster + turbojet engine
Operational range: up to 400 km (215 nmi)
Flight altitude: sea-skimming
Guidance system: Inertial guidance, mid-course GPS, terminal Ka-band AESA radar homing (ARH)

Platforms:
Maya class DDG
Mogami class FFM

Truck-mounted Surface to Ship Missiles:

Type 88 / SSM-1 surface-to-ship missile (88式地対艦誘導弾)

... is a truck-mounted anti-ship missile developed by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in the late 1980s. It is a land-based version of the air-launched Type 80 (ASM-1) missile; in turn it was developed into the ship-launched Type 90 (SSM-1B) missile.

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force bought 54 transporter erector launchers, each carrying six Type 88 missiles, for use as coastal batteries. With a range of 180 km (97 nmi; 112 mi), high subsonic speed and 225 kg (496 lb) warhead, it is similar to the US Harpoon missile.

Specifications:
Mass: 661 kg (1,457 lb)
Length: 5.08 m (16.7 ft)
Diameter: 350 mm (13.8 in)
Warhead: 225 kg (496 lb) high explosive
Engine: Mitsubishi TJM2 turbojet + 1 solid rocket booster
Operational range: 180 km (97 nmi; 112 mi)
Flight altitude: 5-6 m
Maximum speed: 1,150 km/h (715 mph)
Guidance system: Inertial guidance and terminal active radar homing

Successor: in 2015, an upgrade of the Type 88 became operational called the Type 12.

Type 12 surface-to-ship missile (12式地対艦誘導弾)

... is a truck-mounted anti-ship missile developed by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in 2012. It is an upgrade of the Type 88 (SSM-1) surface-to-ship missile. The Type 12 features INS with mid-course GPS guidance and better precision due to enhanced Terrain Contour Matching and target discrimination capabilities. The weapon is networked, where initial and mid-course targeting can be provided by other platforms, and also boasts shorter reload times, reduced lifecycle costs, and a range of 124 mi (108 nmi; 200 km).

The missile shares the same Ka-band Active Electronic Scanned Array (AESA) radar seeker with Japanese BVRAAM missile, AAM-4B.

Specifications:
Mass: 700 kg
Length: 5 meters
Diameter: 350 mm (13.8 in)
Engine: solid fuel rocket booster + turbojet engine
Operational range: up to 200 km (108 nmi)
Flight altitude: sea-skimming
Guidance system: Inertial guidance, mid-course GPS, terminal Ka-band AESA radar homing (ARH)

future Type 12 surface-to-ship missile versions:

The MoD approved the development of an improved version of the Type 12 SSM on 18 December 2020 by the Cabinet. According to Japanese newspapers, the range will be extended from 200 km to 900 km, with a future target of 1,500 km. It will have a stealthy shape to reduce Radar Cross Section (RCS), as well as high mobility to prevent interception from the enemy. It can attack not only naval vessels but also ground targets. The MoD intends to launch the improved Type 12 SSM not only from the ground, but also from naval vessels and aircraft. Development of the improved Type 12 ground-launched anti-ship missile is expected to finish by fiscal year 2025.

Air to Ship Missiles:

Type 80 / ASM-1 air-to-ship missile (80式空対艦誘導弾)

... is an air-launched anti-ship missile developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It entered service with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in 1980.

The missile is primarily intended as an air-launched coastal defence weapon. In fact, it is somewhat more capable than this, able to engage both sea and land targets such as buildings and bridges. The Type 80 also serves as the basis of several other weapons; it forms part of the ground-launched SSM-1 system and was also developed into the Type 88 (SSM-1) surface-to-ship missile, the Type 90 (SSM-1B) ship-to-ship missile, and the Type 91 (ASM-1C) and Type 93 (ASM-2) anti-ship missiles.

Specifications:
Mass: 600 kg (1,323 lb)
Length: 4.0 m (13.1 ft)
Diameter: 350 mm (13.8 in)
Wingspan: 1.2 m (3.9 ft)
Warhead: 150 kg (331 lb) high explosive (HE)
Propellant: single stage solid propellent rocket motor
Operational range: 50 km (27 nmi)
Maximum speed: Mach 0.9
Guidance system: Inertial guidance and terminal active radar homing

Successor: Type 93 / ASM-2.

Launch platforms:
Mitsubishi F-1 (JASDF)
Kawasaki P-3
Kawasaki P-1

Type 91 / ASM-1C air-to-ship missile (91式空対艦誘導弾)

... is an improved Type 80 / ASM-1 variant.

Type 93 / ASM-2 air-to-ship missile (93式空対艦誘導弾)

... is an air-to-ship missile developed in Japan by using technology from the Type 88 surface-to-ship missile.
This missile is used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

Operational range: 170 km (92 nmi).
Guidance system: Inertial guidance, IR imaging, GPS

Successor: The ASM-2 will be replaced by the ASM-3

Launch platforms:
Mitsubishi F-2
F-4EJ Kai Phantom II

ASM-3

... is a supersonic anti-ship missile being developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to replace the Type 80 + 91 ASM-1 and Type 93 ASM-2 missiles. The major launch platform is the Mitsubishi F-2. Planned Initial Operational Capability was 2016. The missile will be used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. It can attack not only ships, but also ground targets. Since the original model of ASM-3 had a short range of 200 km, it was not deployed immediately, and an improved model was developed from 2017 to 2020, and deployment of ASM-3A with a range of about 300-400 km started in 2021. In the future, it may also have a range of 400 km or more.

Variants:
ASM-3A - Extended range version of ASM-3
ASM-3 Kai - Improved version of ASM-3A
