USS Groton (SSN 694):

The second Groton (SSN-694) was laid down on 3 August 1973, at the city for which she was named, by General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division; launched on 9 October 1976; sponsored by Mrs. Anne H. Richardson, wife of former Attorney General Elliot Richardson; and commissioned on 8 July 1978, Cmdr. R. William Vogel III, in command.

Groton’s principal mission was to operate against enemy submarines and surface ships and she operated in all seven seas. In 1980, she set sail for the Indian Ocean and her first extended deployment. In 1982, she rejoined the Seventh Fleet to protect American interests in the Arabian Gulf. From 1983 to 1985 Groton conducted three deployments to the Northern Atlantic. Following an overhaul in Groton, Conn., from 1989 to 1996 she had four deployments to the Mediterranean, including the enforcement of the Yugoslavian arms embargo of Operation Sharp Guard in 1994. In 1995 and 1996, her presence in the Adriatic was considered fundamental to peacekeeping in the Balkans.

Groton was decommissioned on 7 November 1997 at Portsmouth, N.H. and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day.

During her period of service Groton earned the Navy Unit Commendation (1980), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, and NATO Medal; she also won the “Hook ‘Em” award for anti-submarine warfare excellence in 1989.

Ex-Groton was scheduled to enter the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program in Bremerton, Washington 1 October 2011. Recycling was completed in 2014.

... is a town in New London County, Connecticut, located on the Thames River. It is the home of General Dynamics Electric Boat, which is the major contractor for submarine work for the United States Navy. The Naval Submarine Base New London is located in Groton, and the pharmaceutical company Pfizer is also a major employer. Avery Point in Groton is home to a regional campus of the University of Connecticut. The town is part of the Southeastern Connecticut Planning Region. The population was 38,411 at the 2020 census.
