HMAS Pilbara (OPV 205):

The first Arafura class Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) built in Western Australia was launched at a ceremony at Henderson Maritime Precinct on October 31, 2025.

NUSHIP Pilbara is the third Arafura class OPV built but the first of four being constructed in WA, with NUSHIPs Gippsland, Illawarra, and Carpentaria to follow.

Today’s launch marked an important milestone for the SEA1180 Phase 1 Arafura class OPV project, with Civmec Defence Industries and its industry partners leading construction of the vessels.

The first two OPVs were successfully delivered to the Royal Australian Navy this year. HMAS Arafura was commissioned in June 2025 and NUSHIP Eyre is currently preparing for operational release.

Named after the Pilbara region in WA, OPV 3 is the first Royal Australian Navy vessel to carry the name.

-RAN-

Protecting Australia’s coastal and territorial waters, Arafura’s primary focus will be on fisheries protection, border security, customs and law enforcement operations.

Patrolling Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone, Arafura will work with Australian Border Force, Australian Federal Police and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority. It will also collaborate with regional partners to uphold Australian and International law. This is to ensure our region’s security, defence and economic prosperity against:
- unauthorised entry
- breaches of customs, immigration and drugs legislation
- illegal activity
- risks to the integrity of national fish-stocks, marine environments and other natural resources

Pilbara

... is a large, dry, sparsely populated region in the north of Western Australia. It is known for its Aboriginal people, its geography, its red earth, and its vast mineral deposits, in particular iron ore.
