NRP Pero Escobar (F 335):

Similar to the Venezuelan Navy Almirante Clemente class destroyer escorts but with lighter armament.

F 335 NRP Pêro Escobar was a frigate of the Portuguese Navy that was in service from 1957 to 1975.

The ship was designed and built in Italy - based on US designs - and transferred from the USA to the Portuguese Navy. In addition to the ships for Portugal, three other ships of the same class were also built for Venezuela, forming the Almirante-Clemente class.

For many years, the frigate Pêro Escobar was the fastest ship in the Portuguese Navy. Because of her elegant lines, the frigate was nicknamed Gina.

The ship was armed with two 76mm guns, one 40mm anti-aircraft gun and two 20mm anti-aircraft guns.

In 1961, Pêro Escobar was involved in the pursuit and search of the ship Santa Maria, which was diverted by opponents of the "Estado Novo".

In 1967-1968, the ship's electronics and armament were modernized. The frigate received MLT-3A and MLA-1B radars and SQS-29 sonar. The new armament consisted of four 76 mm guns, two squid launchers and two three-barreled 324 mm anti-submarine torpedo tubes.

Pedro Escobar, also known as Pero Escobar

... was a 15th-century Portuguese navigator who discovered São Tomé (December 21, 1471), Annobón (January 1, 1472), Príncipe (January 17, 1472) islands, together with João de Santarém c. 1470. He is then recorded sailing with Diogo Cão on his first voyage in 1482, and as the pilot of the famous Bérrio caravel on Vasco da Gama's first expedition in 1497 to sail directly from Europe to India. He was also on Pedro Álvares Cabral's discovery of Brazil in 1500.
